The Greeks adopted a form of the Phoenician yodh as their letter iota (?Ι, ι?) to signify /i/, similar to while in the Aged Italic alphabet. In Latin (as in Modern-day Greek), it had been also accustomed to represent /j/ and this use persists within the languages that descended from Latin.
